Media Conference Set - Honor Flight at CID Taking Off
FOR IMMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 1, 2010 – A media conference is scheduled for 11 a.m., Tues., April 6 to provide information about the efforts and how the public can participate in this area’s first Honor Flight for veterans of World War II. The media conference will be at PS Air, 3411 Beech Way, SW, at The Eastern Iowa Airport.
The North Central Iowa Honor Flight Hub is the 93rd hub in the Honor Flight network, a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans. The North Central Iowa Honor Flight is the outreach for veterans in eight counties including Linn, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Benton, Jones, Tama and Iowa. NCI hub members estimate there are about 5,000 WWII veterans living in those counties.
Local Hub members are spearheading the effort to raise funds to charter a 737 aircraft for a flight this year that would take group of about 160 local veterans to the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC. The trip would be one day, with the group leaving early in the morning and returning late that night.
PS Air, a locally-owned fixed-based operator at The Eastern Iowa Airport, will be providing personnel and the facility to assist with the flight, along with personnel from The Eastern Iowa Airport.
Veterans travel for free. Others who fulfill the roles of guardians pay the equivalent of a roundtrip coach ticket. Fundraising goes primarily for the cost of chartering the aircraft.
NCI Hub Director Mike Moran will lead the media conference. Others who will be available are: , Mary Clapp, a registered nurse from Marion who began the organization of the local hub in 2009, a Hy-Vee representative to discuss a fund-raising opportunity and veterans who have taken an Honor Flight and can talk about their experience.
