Airport Receives $200,000 Federal Grant FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Aug. 9, 2006 - WASHINGTON – Sen. Chuck Grassley today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $200,000 to the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids through the Small Community Air Service Development program. Cedar Rapids will use the funds to market recently improved service to St. Louis and Atlanta. An additional $120,000 will be contributed by local sources. “Strengthening local airports in Iowa is important for economic development and improving the quality of life for our rural areas and urban communities,” Grassley said. The Small Community Air Service Development program helps communities address the challenges of local air service. Communities around the country use grant money to develop programs such as financial incentives to air carriers, studies to determine air service needs, and marketing programs that encourage communities to use commercial carriers offering local air service. Airport Director Dan Mann said the success of this grant application was due to a wonderful community partners. “This would not have been possible without the partnership of Gazette Communications and Priority One and the strong support of Corridor travelers,” he said. Air service to St. Louis and Atlanta is important to both business and leisure travelers and working to enhance this service is good for the overall economic health of the Corridor, he said. |
